OVERVIEW

NikonLab is an interactive augmented reality (AR) experience designed as a TikTok filter using Effect House. It aims to empower photography enthusiasts and professionals by showcasing the artistic potential of ISO, Shutter Speed, and Aperture adjustments. By simulating real-world camera controls in AR, NikonLab transforms abstract photography concepts into a hands-on, immersive learning experience.

Project Role:

Project Lead, Research Lead, Data Analyst, Visual Designer, Band Strategist, AR Developer, Creative Technologist, AI Prompt Engineer, Videographer

Skills:

Research,Visual Scripting, AR Development, Brand Integration,Videography, Video Editing, Motion Graphic Development

OBJECTIVES

With a staggering 94% drop in worldwide camera shipments between 2010 and 2023, the accessibility of high-quality smartphone cameras has shifted public interest away from traditional photography equipment. NikonLab seeks to bridge this gap by sparking curiosity and reigniting an appreciation for photography fundamentals.

The project educates TikTok users through an engaging AR filter that mimics the effects of ISO, Shutter Speed, and Aperture adjustments. By exploring these settings' artistic potential, NikonLab not only demystifies complex photography concepts but also repositions them as creative tools, inspiring a new generation to experiment with traditional photographic techniques.

RESEARCH

Secondary Resources

Market Analysis, Behavioural and Educational Trends

In our researches we have highlighted the challenged and opportunities in the camera industries. We will provide Market Insight, Product Versatility, as well as Engagement Strategy.

Market Insight

Our Market Insights show a decline in worldwide camera shipment , also highlights smartphones as its competitor.

According to CIPA (a Japanese camera industry association), the worldwide shipment of cameras has experienced a dramatic decline, dropping from 109 million units in 2010 to just 6.54 million units in 2023—a staggering 94% decrease over 13 years.

By 2017, 85% of digital images are captured through smartphones.

Product Versatility

The gap between an amateur and professional photographers is their understanding on the usage of ISO, aperture and shutter speed settings, with 60% of beginners struggling to navigate these functions and 75% that overlook its artistic potential.

In contrast, 90% of professional photographers express that it is crucial to use these settings for artistic expression.

Engagement Strategy

My solution suggests to bridge this gap through curiosity by educating TikTok users with a AR filter that micmics the effects from these adjustments, exploring its artistic potentials.

Tiktok is chosen to be the platform to host this filter as it has 1 Billion active monthly users, allowing the filter and brand to hit a large demographic of audience.

For this project, AR was chosen to be the educational medium as 95% of students find AR-based learning significantly more engaging and effective than traditional methods.

The search term "Creative Photography Tips" saw a 28% increase in 2023, highlighting a growing interest in artistic camera use—a promising market that this project aims to engage and bridge.

Hardware: Smart Phones
Software: Effect House, Adobe Illustrator, Figma

FILTER DEVELOPMENT

FILTER DEVELOPMENT

"Time Altered Timeline" illustrates the historical relationship between drugs and society, examining societal attitudes over time and projecting into the future. This visual, research-driven timeline uses coded imagery to depict substance legality, societal acceptance, and functional roles across diverse contexts.

Pseudo Code

The Pseudo Code for this project is developed in the form of a flow chart for easy visualization.

the following elements codes the interactivity of each node on the chart.

The flow chart is consisted of the main chart, and three subgraphs that shows the screen display factors, lens selection control, and the aperture filter variation.

The screen display is determined by 5 elements, the default display elements such as the toggles, adjustment bar, logo etc, the black and white mode, lens selected, info overlay screen depending on it's activation status, adjustment intensity.

Wireframe & User interface elements

The Wireframe and User Interface element showcases the visual elements on the screen.

The colour palette consist of the two signature colours of Nikon and cream yellow as an accent colour.

The Educational AR department is branded as NIkonLab, emphasizing its role as a creative playground for exploration and learning
